We are so excited for your new venture into this wonderful career!
North Dakota Home Inspector Requirements
The requirements to become a home inspector in North Dakota, as enforced by the North Dakota Secretary of State, are fairly straightforward. The North Dakota home inspector license requirements are as follows:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Pass an approved state exam on home inspections.
- Provide proof of errors and omissions insurance for your business.
- Submit your application and pay the application fee.
Since you are not required to take an education course, you could theoretically become an inspector in no time at all. To help you understand each of these requirements, we have explained in depth below.
Pass an approved exam.
When you submit your application to become a home inspector in North Dakota, you will need to submit proof that you have passed an approved state exam. These types of exams will test you on your knowledge of home inspecting as well as other business related aspects. If you do not feel prepared for the exam, you ought to either study some materials from the examination provider themselves. Even better, however, is to take a home inspection course that covers the various aspects of your new profession. Many of the approved exam providers offer such courses. Per the website, the following are approved exam providers:
- American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI)
- InterNACHI
- Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors (EBPHI)
- International Code Council (ICC)
Once you have passed your exam, breathe a sigh of relief–you fulfilled the education requirement for home inspecting.
Provide proof of insurance.
This next North Dakota home inspector requirement deals with protecting you and your client in the case of a mistake or lawsuit. Errors and omissions insurance (E&O) for home inspectors, often known as professional liability insurance, protects you when your clients accuse you of missing or omitting something from your report during their inspection. In other words, you’re protected when clients accuse you of not doing your job right.
By carrying this insurance, you can have peace of mind–whether you actually messed up or are just accused of doing so. The required insurance limits are:
Professional Liability / Errors and Omissions (E&O) Requirement
Limits of $100,000 (per occurrence) / $100,000 (aggregate) or more in E&O
Once you successfully bind (purchase) your coverage, you can request a proof of insurance from your insurance provider or broker, which you will submit along with your application.
Submit your application.
Once you have passed the exam and obtained the coverage to meet the North Dakota home inspector insurance requirements, you can finally turn in the application (cue fanfare)! The application fee to register as a home inspector is $200. Fill out the Home Inspector Registration Application (SFN 54381) and submit it with proof that you passed your exam and the proof of insurance.
You will need to renew your North Dakota home inspector license every year by June 30th, which will include a $50 renewal fee.
We are, once again, excited to help you with your new home inspection endeavor. Reach out whenever you have questions, concerns, or need help protecting your business with E&O and general liability insurance. We at InspectorPro are rooting for you!
